From Playa Coyote to Carrillo

The area between Playa Coyote /San Miguel and Carrillo /Samara hosts some of the most remote and undeveloped beaches of the Nicoya Peninsula. Only few hotels and restaurants are dispersed along the route, instead there are wild beaches where you can enjoy being alone.

Driving from Playa Coyote to Samara:

In dry season you can drive from Coyote to Carrillo and Samara with a simple passenger car. In rainy season however, some tracks can prove impassable even with a 4WD.
Check if your spare tire and tools are in good order, there are few settlements and no car workshops on your way.

In rainy season from Punta Coyote to San Francisco de Coyote: With heavy rains the Rio Jabillo (see Coyote Map) sometimes floods the road and turns it into quagmires and swamps which can be impassable for several weeks.

Rains can also turn the slopes of the hilly surroundings near Islita into mud slides.

Only two kms from Carrillo there is one of the biggest obstacles on your way: at any time of the year you can ford the Rio Ora only at low tide. Check the tide plans and calculate your trip accordingly. Rainy season or heavy rains during green season often make it impossible to ford this big river. For alternative roads check the above map. A paved road from Carrillo until Hotel Punta Islita is currently under construction.
