In recent years some of the most scenic beachfront restaurants hotels in Malpais had to close because Costa Rican law forbids any construction within 200 m from the high tide line.
Hence Soda Piedra Mar, part of Mar Azul Hotel and Restaurant, and Sunset Reef Hotel were torn down.
