Animals on the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica

Both of the two species of iguanas are commonly seen on the Nicoya Peninsula. The Green Iguana on the right picture can become up to 2 metres long which makes it the largest iguana in America. Besides vegetables they also eat insects, small animals and carrion.

The brownish-grey Black Iguanas are vegetarians. Costa Ricans call them garrobos or gallina de palo - tree chicken - a name which was given for a reason...
Geckos are useful room mates chasing a lot of insects. Take care not to destroy their small eggs which you can find in shelves or corners of your house. Best leave them undisturbed where you found them.
