Animals on the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica

Brown Pelikan

Brown Pelicans are abundant all along the coast of Costa Rica. It is a beautiful pastime to just sit and watch them fly in superb formations along the shore or plunge-dive for fish.

Frigate Bird

Frigate Birds are artistic flyers and are often seen hanging motionless in the sky. Their feathers aren't waterproof so they often harass gulls and terns until they release their catch.
The adult male is almost black while the much larger female has a white breast.

  Wood Stork

Wood Storks are over a meter tall with white plumage and black feathers unter their wings. They look odd with their unusual and bald head but they fly gracefully. The gregarious birds nest in dense colonies atop mangrove or other trees by the water. Wood storks are commun in the north of Costa Rica, especially around the Tempisque River.

White Ibis

White Ibises live in saltwater and freshwater habitats. They are often found in groups of birds probing for food in soft mud.
